Hi. I am worried about my periods. Today is my 36th day of the cycle. Yesterday i did a pregnancy test and the results were negative. Last time i had sex(used protection though) was january 4th. Is there anything to be worried about.? Are there any other reasons othet than pregnancy that could delay periods. NB have never used any birth control pill

Dear Mwanji,

The menstrual cycle is counted from the first day of one period to the first day of the next, the menstrual flow might occur every 21 to 35 days.

However there are factors that could alter your menstrual cycle, these includes;-
• Eating disorders, extreme weight loss or excessive exercising. Eating disorders such as extreme weight loss and increased physical activity can disrupt menstruation.
• Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). This infection of the reproductive organs can cause irregular menstrual bleeding.
• Uterine fibroids. Uterine fibroids are noncancerous growths of the uterus. They can cause heavy menstrual periods and prolonged menstrual periods.
• Premature ovarian failure. Premature ovarian failure refers to the loss of normal ovarian function before age 40. Women who have premature ovarian failure — also known as primary ovarian insufficiency — might have irregular or occasional periods for years.

Treatment will vary with the issue, it is therefore important that you talk to a health care provider.

All the best.
